Eight + Sand

October 17, 2017

Based in the cities of Oakland and Austin the designers of Eight + Sand spend a fair amount of time on the road. They were inspired by the journey and an old rail yard saying meaning godspeed, or "I hope you get where you're going and have what you need". Conductors would bid each other farewell by saying eight and sand, "eight for a wide-open throttle and sand on the rails to ensure a smooth ride". The company takes inspiration from the old in more ways than just the name, heirloom quality craftsmanship is the backbone of their designs. They strive to create pieces that fit in with the fewer better mindset, built to last, classic wardrobe staples.

Fit has been a major focus of their designs from the beginning, in fact they have a whole section on fit here to help you find your perfect piece. They forwent the standard size charts and measured real people to establish their sizing. The site also offers a measuring guide, option to save your measurements for future purchases and a detailed chart of specific measurements for each style. As an added bonus they include a handy measuring tape with your order.

Transparency is also a big part of the Eight + Sand business ethos, each item contains a detailed description of material sourcing. For example the Stone Twill Button Down (shown below) is designed cut and sown in the USA, made from organic cotton that was woven and finished in Japan, and lastly topped off with Italian made buttons. Materials are all ethically source and they use sustainable fabrics wherever possible.

I love a crisp white button down and their organic cotton version has the perfect slightly stiff, but still relaxed and comfortable texture. I've been wearing it tucked in or tied up with high waisted pants and jeans. It would be gorgeous under a blazer or a full suit as well. Another favorite is the previously mentioned Stone Twill Button Down, the fabric is wonderfully soft and delicious. Its lovely on its own or as a light fall coverup, check out our pictures below (details and links at the bottom of the page).
